So I scrounged up a deal (with MCA Records/Home Video) and wrote the script. But when I told him that I wanted to make videos and get back into music, he said, `Well, if you really want to do it, go out and do it and I`ll come along.` He didn`t particularly want to get back into music, either. ''Tommy was living in France at the time, and he wasn`t really hip to what was happening in videos. ![]() ''He wasn`t really that interested in this particular project,'' says Cheech. We took a lot of time off after that, and I figured that when we did come back, we should come back in a real minimal situation where it was just Tommy and me in a recording studio instead of on a big movie set surrounded by 70 Teamsters standing around eating jelly doughnuts.''īut Chong, it turned out, wasn`t all that eager to come back. If it doesn`t do business the first week, you`re on the shelf. The unfortunate thing is that when you put out a major studio movie, you have a week to prove yourself. ''I didn`t really want to make it,'' says Cheech of the slapstick costume comedy set during the French Revolution, ''but we did it anyway, and it was a bomb. Their popular drug caper films generated a reported half-billion dollars in business from the early 1970s through the early 1980s despite widespread critical contempt, but their last movie, ''The Corsican Brothers,'' flopped big at the box office. ![]() ''But you can only stay hot for so long, and when the movies cooled down, I thought it would be more fun to go back and do records again rather than sit there and wait for the phone to ring.''Īctually, Cheech cheerfully admits, the pair probably would have had a lengthy wait before Hollywood called again. ![]() ''We had a long string (of successes) going in movies, and it had worked really great,'' he adds.
